It is wise not to underestimate the effect of insulin in your body. Contrary to popular opinion, insulin does not only manage the distribution of carbohydrates it turns glucose into energy. Without insulin, the body's cells are starved for energy and needs to search for other sources. For this reason alone, in regards to health and well-being, insulin is everything. Let's take a closer look at insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced in your pancreas. Its discovery in the early 20th century is a significant event in medical history for it answered many of our questions at the time regarding diabetes. Before the discovery of insulin, many diabetics fell victim to premature death. We just did not understand much beyond the fact high blood sugar was harmful to diabetics. We did not yet know there was a "middleman," so to speak, underlying the disease. Insulin is secreted into your bloodstream in response to an increase in your blood sugar levels. When you eat a meal containing some source of carbohydrate, your blood sugar naturally raises. Insulin is issued as a response and drives absorption into your body. Carbohydrates are transported by receptors (activated by insulin) to tissues, where they can be stored or used immediately to fuel physiological functions. That's as simple as it gets. Of course, there are individual mediators involved and more intricate details of this process. We'll keep it basic nuts and bolts for the purpose of this discussion. Why is insulin so important? When insulin's functioning is impaired: when its efficiency takes a hit, that's where problems come in. When the body develops a resistance to insulin, more of it needs to be secreted by your pancreas to achieve absorption of sugar from your bloodstream. Producing more and more insulin due to the body's relaxed response to it, is taxing on your pancreas to say the least. But that's not all. Insulin, in high concentrations, is inherently harmful to your body especially when it remains circulating in your bloodstream for extended periods... for one, insulin promotes fat storage by inhibiting the breakdown of fat cells for energy. what's more: what typically increases insulin resistance in your body, consequently making insulin harmful to you, is primarily weight gain. Essentially, the factor that causes insulin to dysfunction in the first place in turn worsens this very same factor. When all is said and done, you have a vicious cycle on your hands that is soon out of control. Your blood sugar levels may then be chronically elevated, and it becomes difficult to lose the weight you have gained. It's not hard to see how Type 2 diabetes begins and exacerbates from there. Insulin is fundamentally important when it comes to your health. You underestimate it at your peril. Although managing your disease can be very challenging, Type 2 diabetes is not a condition you must just live with. You can make simple changes to your daily routine and lower both your weight and your blood sugar levels. Hang in there, the longer you do it, the easier it gets.
